Redress Petitions

Mormon Redress Petitions

Documents of the 1833-1838 Missouri Conflict
Edited by Clark V. Johnson

Beginning in 1839, the Mormons commenced preparing affidavits describing the losses they had suffered in Missouri, swearing to their authenticity before civil authorities, including justices of the peace, clerks of the court, clerks of the circuit court, clerks of county commissioner’s courts, and notary publics in two counties in Iowa and ten counties in Illinois. Nearly seven hundred men and women wrote almost eight hundred documents. In an effort to obtain reparation for their sufferings, affidavits were organized into at least four separate petitions to the United States government [1839-1844], and produced no relief, nor could federal courts be persuaded to hear the case. This book is a complete collection of all known petitions, as contained in both the Historical Department of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Salt Lake City and the National Archives in Washington DC. Published in 1992. This book gives a grassroots view of this episode in Mormon history.
